Week of April 30 - May 4

As we approach the end of the year our days are full of excitement and anticipation. We are busy preparing for our Spring music concert with extra rehearsals. Scholars are also busy finalizing their art projects for our upcoming Art Walk. Additionally, we are busy learning in the classroom as we continue through our math, language arts, history and science curriculum. This is an exciting time of year to be sure!

This week we will continue on our journey through Pinocchio. The scholars have been delighted reading this book and we have held many fruitful discussions about virtue, growth, and wisdom through the characters of Pinocchio,, the Fox, the Cat, Geppetto, and the Blue Fairy. We will have a seminar discussion on Friday.


In math we have begun our unit on Math. With this unit I am opening up a class shop that the scholars will have the opportunity to buy items from with "coins" earned in class.


In language arts this week we are continuing our study of prepositions. I so enjoy the scholars enjoyment off grammar and intrigue of diagramming. I love grammar too!


In History we have begun studying Early Americans and the scholars have enjoyed discussions about the Native Americans who settled here in Arizona. We will have a quiz on Tuesday.


We continue our study of words in Spalding this week. We will add 32 words to our Spalding journals and will have a word and phonograph test on Friday.


In the midst of this end of year excitement we have also entered allergy season.... and have run out of tissues in the classroom! Would you please consider sending a box or two with your scholar this week? Thank you!

Week of March 26-30

Welcome to a new week full of learning in 3B!

We will not have any Spalding words this week.  We will be using this time in class for extra writing time in preparation for the AZ Merit tests.

In math this week we continue our study of mass using kilograms and grams.

Language arts is focused on writing.  We are writing a persuasive essay this week.  Our focus is on stating an opinion and supporting that opinion through details from the provided text.

In literature we continue reading the story of  Pinocchio.  We have had many wonderful discussion in class about the characters of Pinocchio and Geppetto and have considered how their actions are a reflection of the soul.

This week completed our study of Viking.  Next week we will turn to science and being our unit on ecosystems.

A look ahead:
March 29: Field trip to The Pioneer Village.  Please send a disposable sack lunch.  I encourage students to come to school with a sunscreen already applied.  This field trip will be outside the majority of the day.
March 30: No School, R&R weekend
April 6: Field Day
April 9: AZ Merit testing begins.

Week of March 19 - 23

Welcome to a new week full of learning in 3B!

This week in Spalding we will continue to add words to our Spalding Notebooks. We will be adding 20 words and reviewing 10 previously learned words.  We will have a Spalding and phonogram test on Friday.

In math this week we will begin our unit on Mass and Weight. We will have a quiz on Friday.

Language arts this week includes reading and narrating (both orally and in writing) a selection from about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. We will also learn how to diagram a question.

This week we turn to history and continue learning about the Vikings.

Week of February 26 - March 2

Welcome to a new week full of learning in 3B!

This week in Spalding we will continue to add words to our Spalding Notebooks. We will also complete Rule Page 3 on which we learn Rule 10. Rule 10 states: Words of multiple syllables (begin) in which the second syllable (gin) is accented and ends in one consonant, with one vowel before it, need another final consonant (be gin' + ning) before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel. Confusing as this may sound now, ask your scholar about it on Wednesday or Thursday and they will be able to explain it to you beautifully! We will have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday as well as our monthly Morrison McCall 50 word test.

In math this week we will begin our unit on Area and Perimeter. Through hands on experiences we will discover that area is the amount of flat space a shape covers and perimeter is the distance around the outside of the shape. We will have a quiz over area on Thursday.

Language arts this week includes reading and narrating (both orally and in writing) a selection from the book Babe: the Gallant Pig. We will also be reviewing the four types of sentences.

In literature we continue our journey through Little House on the Prairie. We will have a comprehension quiz on Tuesday over chapters 18-21. We will also have a seminar discussion on Friday.

This week we turn to science and continue our exploration of the classification of animals.

Week of February 19 - 23


I trust that you have had a restful weekend thus far and have plans for fun and rest tomorrow. I am excited to see everyone back in the classroom on Tuesday! Our week will be packed full of learning, as always!

This week in Spalding we will add 20 new words to our Spalding notebooks. We will have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday.

In math this week we will begin our unit on Angles. We will learn to identify and define acute, obtuse, and right angles. We will have a test on Friday.

Language arts this week includes writing a key word outline and using that outline to form a beautiful summary. We will then edit this writing and write a final draft. Over the weekend scholars will type their summary.

In literature we continue our journey through Little House on the Prairie. We are enjoying reading through the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and discussing the concepts of safety and home in our biweekly seminar discussions. We do not have a seminar discussion this week, however, we will have a comprehension quiz on Tuesday over chapters 15-17.

This week in History we continue our exploration of the Norsemen and Vikings. We have enjoyed learning of their life, trade, culture and government. We will have a history test on Friday.

Thank you for your continued support assign typing homework once a week. We have the opportunity to use school computers most Wednesdays to practice typing in class, but feel that it is important that our scholars have extra practice in preparation for the April AZ Merit test.

Week of January 22 - 26

We are so very excited for our field trip this week to see the play of The Lion the Which and the Wardrobe! Thank you to our chaperones for volunteering your time to our class.  Because of the time of the play (11:30) We will be eating a big snack at school around 9:30.  Please pack a LARGE snack for your students to eat at this time.  We will then eat lunch following the play at about 1:00.  Lunches must be packed in disposable bags and be entirely disposable after eating!  Water bottles must also be disposable. 

In addition to our field trip, we also have a full week of learning in 3B!

This week in Spalding we will add 21 new words to our Spalding notebooks!  We will have a spelling and phonogram test on Friday, January 26. On Monday we will also take our monthly Morrison McCall 50 test. This test is not taken for a grade and is only a means of measuring growth in students.

In math this week we will complete our math unit on Measurement.  We will have a test on Wednesday.  This also means that we are ready to begin our 3B math workbook. If it is not already in the classroom, please send it in by Thursday.

Language arts this week includes writing an opinion paragraph, learning to write topic and concluding sentences, and a poetry lesson on Stanza three of The Lake Isle of Innisfree. Poetry recitation will be on February 7.

This week in History we will be returning to our study of the Roman Empire.

Thank you for your support as we move to assigning typing homework once a week.  I know this is new and different, but we feel that it is invaluable for our students as we prepare for the AZ Merit test.

Week of December 18- December 22

Though this week is short, much learning is still taking place inside or classroom!  We are very excited for winter break, but are striving for diligence and integrity through the very end.

This week in Spalding we will add 20 new words to our Spalding notebooks!  We will have a spelling and phonogram test on Wednesday, December 20.

In math this week we will complete our math unit on Multiplication and Division.  We will have a Test on Wednesday. 

Language arts this week includes a seminar discussion on The Little Prince as well as a special poetry lesson taught by Mrs. Arbogast.

This week dismissal is at 12:00 each day and lunch is not served at school.  Scholars must be picked up by 12:30.

We have no school for Winter Break December 21 through January 7.

When we return to school on January 8 we are excited to begin project week and will be studying the human skeletal system.  Be looking for more information to come about that when we return from break.
